Gerard Butler, Mull of Galloway, KeepersThe three Lighthouse Holiday Cottages were booked for exclusive use during March 2017 for the filming of a new feature film called ‘Keepers’.

Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan, Connor Swindells and Gary Lewis have all been involved in filming “Keepers” at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse and in various other locations in the Rhins of Galloway. Keepers is a thriller written by Joe Bone and Celyn Jones based on the Flannan Isle mystery where three Keepers mysteriously vanished in 1900. Filming took place at the Mull of Galloway where the Lighthouse and peninsula are used as the main locations for the film acting as Flannan and Eilean Mor Lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides.

Kittiwake House Holiday Cottage was used as a film set and transformed from its modern condition into a very old Lightkeepers’ Cottage complete with Bakelite switches, dark paintwork and bunk beds! Kittiwake was used as the bedrooms for the three keepers whilst the living space was built as a set in a building in Stranraer. Lightkeeper’s Cottage and Puffin House were used by the cast and crew (including Gerard Butler!) as the ‘green rooms’ for relaxing in-between shoots, make up and for refreshment’s.

On leaving the Mull of Galloway Gerard Butler wrote in the guest book at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse:

“What a breath-taking location to spend some time in. Warm and welcoming and dangerous and foreboding at the same time. Thanks for the hospitality and allowing us in to tell our story. I get to be a keeper at one of the most beautiful locations there is”.

The film is due for release next year and we hope you will be inspired to visit the location and enjoy your break in our remote location! You can find us on the Scottish mainland and we are as far south in Scotland as you can travel.
