Lighthouse Keepers’ Vegetable Garden at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse
The Mull of Galloway Trust has been working hard to bring back to life the former Lighthouse Keepers’ vegetable garden which has not been used since the mid 1980s.
With help from Awards for All, Tesco Bags of Help and Grow Wild the garden has now been transformed by creating a living willow sculpture, a large turfed area which can be used for events including weddings and the construction of a wooden summerhouse and decking.
Wildlife
Local school children and Sunday School children created three bug hotels with the help of RSPB. A further large expanse has deliberately been left wild to attract birds and insects plus various wildlife such as little bunnies and hares.
Local Community
The rowing boat has been planted up with daffodils again – these bulbs were sponsored by parents and friends of the children at Drummore Primary School. The only thing left to do now is to place some sort of dead tree with branches where we can hang the many painted wooden fish.
Six raised vegetable beds have been “adopted” by local residents and two new vegetable beds have been made to continue planting with potatoes which are then handed out to senior citizens in the local area.
Hollywood comes to the Mull of Galloway
The garden was the site of the filming of a Hollywood movie starring Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan, Connor Swindells and Gary Lewis plus some supporting help from members of the Mull of Galloway Trust – Dianne James, Stevie Burns, Alison Smith and Maureen Chand. The film is called ‘The Vanishing’ (formerly named Keepers) and is based on the disappearing Lighthouse Keepers on Flannan Isle. The official trailer is now available.
Welcome to our garden
The garden will be open to visitors from Easter 2019 and we have placed a picnic table and bench for their use. Guests to the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse Holiday Cottages may use the summerhouse and garden and there is a croquet set and garden furniture for their enjoyment.
